How to Choose a 360 Camera: What Actually Matters

Buying guide

Most 360 camera checklists rank the wrong things. These are the decisions that change what you actually shoot, edit and publish — in the order you should make them.

First decision

360 or an action camera: settle this before you shop

The format decides your mount, your editing time and your budget. Pick the wrong one and no specification list will rescue the footage.

360

Dual-lens 360

You want to choose the shot afterwards.

It records the whole scene and lets you reframe in the app or on a desktop. You gain angles you could not aim at — helmet, chest, bars, a crowded street — and you lose time in the edit. This is the format for people who accept that trade.

1×

Single-lens action camera

You want the shot right in camera.

One lens, one frame, a cleaner file and a faster path to publishing. It is cheaper, lighter and simpler. If you already know the shot you want and you are not going to reframe, this is the honest answer.

If you cannot answer that question yet, do not start with a model. Start with the comparison by use case.

Criteria

Five things that matter more than the spec sheet

Resolution is the easiest number to print and the least useful one to compare. These five change how the camera behaves in your hands.

01

Stabilisation

It matters more in 360 than in a normal action camera: when you reframe you crop into the image, and any shake gets magnified with it. Electronic stabilisation helps a lot, but it cannot fix a mount that was never tight.

02

Battery

Ask whether it is removable and how long it lasts in your kind of use, not in the manufacturer’s best case. Recording in 360 at high quality drains fast. A spare battery is part of the kit, not an optional extra.

03

Water resistance

Never assume it. It depends on the model and, often, on a separate housing. Check the official rating for the exact configuration you plan to use, and put the housing in the budget if water is part of the plan.

04

Mount ecosystem

A camera that fits the mounts you already own saves money and avoids buying the same bracket three times. Read what is in the box and what is sold separately before you compare prices.

05

Editing workflow

The time between the file and the published video is a real buying criterion. If you post daily, a fast app saves hours. If you shoot 360 to fix the frame later, you need editing headroom — and a phone or computer that can handle it.

Mistakes

The five purchases people regret

None of these are exotic. They are the ones that come up again and again after the return window closes.

  • Buying by resolution. Two cameras with similar numbers can look very different once lens, processing and stabilisation are involved.
  • Forgetting the accessories. Card, spare battery and mounts usually cost more than expected.
  • Assuming it is dive-ready. Without checking model and housing, that is a gamble, not a feature.
  • Choosing 360 for simple vertical content. If you will never reframe, an action camera makes the work easier.
  • Ignoring who sells it. Seller, warranty and return policy matter as much as the product.

Five-minute decision

Decide in five minutes

A short sequence that removes most of the doubt before you look at a single listing.

  • 1. What are you recording? The subject and the conditions order every other question.
  • 2. Which format? 360 or single-lens. There is no better option, only the one that matches the use.
  • 3. Read the official sheet. Battery and water resistance in the manufacturer’s documentation, not in a store banner.
  • 4. Build the real budget. Add card, battery and mounts to the camera price.
  • 5. Check seller and warranty. Confirm who ships it and what happens if something goes wrong.

Next step

Take the shortlist, not the whole market

Once the format is clear, the choice narrows fast. The buying guide compares five cameras by the profile they actually suit, limits included.
