How to decide

Stop shopping by resolution

A 360 camera is not chosen by megapixels. It is chosen by how the footage gets used. If you shoot action and want to fix framing later, you need two lenses and a reframe workflow. If you want to clip something on and forget it, you need something small. If you never reframe, you do not need 360 at all. That is roughly 80% of the decision.

The list below is short on purpose. Every option here is one we would still recommend today, and each one answers a different question.

The shortlist

Five options, one per job

Find the row that sounds like your shooting day, then read the note under it.

Flagship 360

Insta360 X5

For people who want the most complete 360 kit and shoot in demanding conditions.

Insta360 X5 360 action camera with two lenses

This is the reference point of the category: two lenses, and you pick the frame after the fact instead of aiming on location. The trade-off is time — every clip needs a reframe before it is watchable — and the accessory bench is deep for a reason. Read the full breakdown in our Insta360 X5 review.

Best value

Insta360 X4

For a full 360 workflow without paying for the newest generation.

Insta360 X4 360 action camera with two lenses

The previous generation still does the job. Same two-lens approach, same reframe-first workflow, and a much easier case to make if this is your first 360 camera. Check who is actually selling it and what warranty applies before you pay.

Everyday carry

Insta360 GO 3S

For daily footage when a full-size camera would stay in the bag.

Insta360 GO 3S compact camera with detachable action pod

Tiny, wearable and quick to start: the camera you actually bring beats the one that stays home. It is not built for long sessions or rough conditions, so treat it as a daily-carry tool rather than an action workhorse.

Single lens

Insta360 Ace Pro 2

For vlogs and social video where you do not need 360 at all.

Insta360 Ace Pro 2 action camera with flip screen

One lens, one frame, no reframing. If your output is vertical and you want a clean shot straight out of camera, this saves hours of editing. Do not buy it to capture a whole room — that is a different camera.

Alternative

GoPro MAX

For people already inside the GoPro ecosystem or wanting a second brand.

GoPro MAX 360 action camera with touch screen

A 360 camera with GoPro’s mounting logic and a different learning curve. Worth comparing if you already own the mounts. Verify the seller and the warranty on the listing every time.

What actually matters on the spec sheet

  • Removable battery or not: it decides whether you can shoot a full day away from a socket.
  • Water resistance: never assume it. It depends on the model and on the case you may still need.
  • Mounts and accessories in the box: a stick and a spare battery are close to mandatory in practice.
  • Storage: 360 footage produces big files; the card is part of the budget, not an afterthought.
  • Seller and warranty: on Amazon the listing matters as much as the product.
  • Editing patience: 360 means reframing. If you will not do it, buy a single-lens camera.

Questions

Frequently asked

What is the difference between a 360 camera and an action camera?

A 360 camera records the whole surroundings with two lenses and lets you choose the frame in editing. An action camera records one fixed frame with one lens: simpler to edit and usually a cleaner file, but you cannot rescue a bad angle afterwards.

Do I have to edit every clip?

At least to pick the framing, yes. The manufacturer apps let you reframe and export on a phone without a desktop editor, but that step still costs time on every clip you publish.

Can I shoot underwater?

It depends on the model and on the housing. We do not assume it: check the official documentation before the camera gets wet, and count the case as part of the kit if it is required.

Why are there no prices on this page?

Because they change daily and vary by country. The valid price is the one on the listing at the moment you buy; anything we publish could be wrong by the next morning.

Next step

Buy for the footage you actually shoot

If you are still torn between 360 and a normal action camera, the answer is usually decided by one question: will you reframe your clips? Everything else is detail.
