What it is
A camera that does 360, but not only 360
The MAX is GoPro’s answer for recording in every direction. You record once and pick the shot later, just like with the Insta360 models: same idea, executed with this brand’s logic.
Its difference is not the concept, it is how it handles. The interface, the menus and the accessories follow the way GoPro works, and if you already live in that ecosystem, learning another app is a real cost you do not pay here.
So what you are buying is not the best 360 camera on the market: it is the 360 camera that fits what you already own. That is the whole argument, and also its limit.
Fit
Buy it if — skip it if
If you have never owned a GoPro, the decision changes completely.
It fits what you already do
You already live in the GoPro ecosystem. Same accessories, same app, same way of mounting. That friction saving is real.
You want a second brand. Two different systems cover more cases than two cameras from the same one.
The family’s toughness matters to you. It is built for hard use, and that shows in how you treat it.
It does not fit
You are starting from zero. Without a previous ecosystem, the X4 does the same job and is the current reference: read the X4 review.
You want the sharpest 360 available. The new Insta360 generation is ahead there: the X5 review.

Budget
Accessories that are not optional in practice
If you come from the ecosystem you will already own part of this. If not, budget for it from the start.
Selfie / invisible stick
With 360, the pole disappears in the stitch and the camera seems to float. It is the accessory that changes the result the most and the first one everybody buys.
Mounts and clamps
For helmet, handlebar or chest. If you already own GoPro mounts, check that the specific piece fits this model before assuming it does.
Dive case
Only if you go under. Check the official depth rating of that specific case: do not assume it handles whatever you have planned.
